I wish to reinforce Donald Satz stand as a reviewer. We all have opinions on various subjects and most of our views are not just based on expertise but also on our background, environment and, I daresay, how we feel at the time of the review. Naturally our knowledge of the subject is paramount.
I sometimes ponder very greatly on whether I should write something derogatory or laudatory about a performance. But then I feel I must be honest with myself and eventually write what I feel - sometimes it is moderated or couched in words that deflect the harshness I feel. Most times it's best to 'let it all hang out'.
It was once suggested to me I should discount myself from criticising a performance of Bruckner's 6th because I had not heard another version of it. That is like discounting yourself from reviewing a football game because you hadn't (obviously) seen it before.
No, Chris Routledge, I applaud your stand to criticise a reviewer but you must allow the reviewer his opinion just as we must respect yours.
I really don't know what all the fuss is about anyway. Sibelius said it best. 'Nobody' he said to Mahler (I think), 'ever erected a monument to a critic'.
That's putting reviewers in their place!
