Posted by John Hill on February 17, 2007, 7:42 pm, in reply to "Re: Hatto? Ha!" Price was a consideration--over $20.00 plus overseas shipping is generally above what I am willing to pay for a single disc. Also, no sound samples seemed to be available for any "Hatto" records. It's much harder for me to resist an impulsive purchase once I hear something I like. Why did the Prokofiev sonatas sound like they were worth having? They were complete, i.e., I could have them all in good performances (according to the critic) ready for me when I needed to prepare for a concert, or when the SP mood struck me. I've heard all about the "problems" of complete sets. But they are convenient if one is trying to pursue any kind of broad collecting plan for "classical" music with limited funds. So yeah, reviews influence what I buy, even sound unheard. So does the cover art work, so does the nationality of the performer(s)/composer... Sounds arbitrary? I guess it is. I have my reasons, though... foe instance, I've been so consistently underwhelmed by the sound of British mixed choirs that I avoid all such recordings. (I'm not saying the sound is "bad", just that I, personally, don't want to hear it. Overall, I am very happy with the discs I order based on MW's reviews (although when I finally played Lislevand's Nuove musiche on ECM, purchased based on a rave review in MW, I decided it was dreadful). Long live MusicWeb! John

Yes, I thought they were, based on the reviews I read in musicweb. But then there are hundreds of discs I keep "wanting to get" but don't.
