Posted by Paul Serotsky on February 18, 2007, 2:34 pm, in reply to "calling all Messiaen connoisseurs" If I were faced with this decision, all other things being equal I would certainly lean towards acquiring Loriod, who by all reports is very special. However, if price was a consideration, and I already had much of the other stuff on the Warner set, I would be perfectly content with Hill's set, which is - again by all reports - an excellent survey. Money no object? Get them both, indulge yourself in an orgy of comparative exploration, then burn yourself an "ideal" set extracted from the two! I might, if my arm were to be twisted(gently), be prepared to do a comparative review, from the point of view not of a connoisseur but of a simple lover of Messiaen's music. However, I've a feeling that you wouldn't want to wait that long!

In lieu of "Messiaen connoisseurs", who all seem to be on holiday, may I stick in my four penn'orth?
