Posted by Dave Payn on February 22, 2007, 5:12 pm, in reply to "Re: Hatto? Ha!" However, as an amateur musician I will say this, having read William Barrington-Coupe's 'denial'. If I were in his shoes and absolutely confident in my ability to provide evidence that Joyce Hatto's entire recorded legacy is indeed, genuine, (which, if it is, should prove perfectly possible to achieve) then I for one would have have accompanied such a denial with a promise of embarking upon the necessary legal action in order to protect my honesty and reputation and to fight defamation of my character that such an accusation has produced. That no such threat of legal action seems to have surfaced in Barrington-Coupe's statement (certainly not in the private email sent to Gramophone) makes me suspicious, to say the least. I have also yet to see or hear any of the accompanying 'musicians' involved in such a lengthy recorded catalogue come forward to back up Barrington-Coupe's response....

Firstly, having read a number of articles and comment on this unfortunate subject, I'll begin by stating that I had never come across the name Joyce Hatto until late last year when a campaign was mounted on the BBC Radio 3 messageboards championing her cause and I certainly was unaware of any 'whisperings' going on before the story broke. Therefore, I have nothing to offer on the technical why and wherefores of this potential 'fraud'.
