Posted by Alistair Hinton I should perhaps clarify what I meant when I referred to the possibility that correspondence between JH/WB-C and othes may have been "fake"; I did not necessarily mean that it was forged per se but that the sources may have been genuine while the content, or part of it, may have been false, or at the very least, embroidered beyond reality. The motive of whoever it was that perpetrated this extraordinary deception remains hopelessly unclear; I think that one of the things that people will want to know is the why, just as much as the who in this case. Frankly, that motive is beyond me to guess - as I imagine is also the case with most people, even Christopher Howell and Jeremy Nicholas. Perhaps the saddest aspects of all of this as of right now in this developing saga are (a) the continuing silence of W-BC [he is no longer answering my e-mail queries about customer orders - Len] and (b) the public distrust that will inevitably be generated in greater quantities the longer it all goes on. For now, all praise to MusicWeb for providing the sanest and most authoritative information on this profoundly dispiriting but necessarily unavoidable subject. Best, Alistair

This contribution from Jeremy Nicholas is, like Christopher Howell's, most interesting and very useful in the overall scheme of things.
