Return to MusicWeb International
Posted by Alistair Hinton The suggestion that he "did it for the wife" sounds decidedly doubtful and that doubtfulness escalates to sheer fatuity when one considers his implication that Joyce Hatto herself knew nothing about what he was doing. He claims to have destroyed the stock, which may or may not be true, but the question nevertheless remains as to how many copies of these fake recordings are still with dealers that ordered them from him. MusicWeb announced its own cessation of sales of these items a few days ago pending further investigation; does it still have any stock or has it returned it to WB-C?[MusicWeb never held any stock. Orders were passed to Concert Artist who mailed discs out the next day - LM] WB-C claims a very specific sales figure for all these CDs which, at just over 5,000 in total, is quite a low one, so quite how credible it may be remains likewise open to question. I'm not poking my nose in and asking for confidential information from MusicWeb as to how many they themselves have sold, but I would like respectfully to ask Len if he might like to consider their position in terms of coming forward at the right time in the right place with supporting sales information when the case finally does come to court. [based on my sales in that period the figure seems about right as his "third-best" customer. Sales of CDs are never as enormous as many imagine - LM] Given WB-C's documented track record on tax evasion (albeit long ago), it would not especially surprise me if HMRC now develop an interest in the profit and turnover figures of this operation if they've not begun to do so already. Perhaps honesty comes in instalments; in this case, we await the rest with interest... Best, Alistair

Now that there has at least been a partial (and perhaps only partially credible) confession on the part of William Barrington-Coupe in respect of these CDs - see http://www.gramophone.co.uk/newsMainTemplate.asp?storyID=2765&newssectionID=1 - the details will presumably now be picked over to see where anyone interested goes from here.
