You are correct in that no critic had been able to tell these were fraudulent recordings just by listening to them and that is the point. You are taking the moral high ground based purely on hindsight. Given a disc to review, critics take what the disc or publicity blurb tells them on trust and why shouldn't they? This has been an exceedingly rare example, unique in its extent, but it could not be detected just by listening. The critic reaches a judgement based on what he hears and comparisons that he might have to hand and the judgements were pretty unanimous across a variety of websites and magazines. This is because they were good performances and many taken from quite obscure sources. MusicWeb had reviewed virtually none of the source discs but are about to do so.
