Posted by Paul Serotsky on March 4, 2007, 8:53 pm, in reply to "Re: Hatto? Ha!" More than anything, right now we need to keep a sense of proportion. As big as this Hatto scandal might seem, in the overall picture it is the minutest of drops in the vast ocean of recordings issued over the years. We should only start worrying if it turns out NOT to be a one-off. In view of the very particular circumstances of the "Hatto affair", and bearing in mind the rather poor return on investment that an audio fraudster would "enjoy", this is not very likely, is it? P.S. What IS the matter with the automatic spelling checker on this B.B? It's just tried to tell me that I've spelt "fraudster" wrong - and then, whilst typing this P.S., that I've also spelt "spelt" wrong!

I would endorse that. Paintings are the prime example - when an "old master" is sold, its authenticity is verified by a battery of experts, and even they by no means spot all the forgeries. The costs are "small" in relation to the price of the "product". The impact of such screening on the retail costs of sound recordings would be prohibitive.
