I can accept the fact that critics are no more able than I to distinguish one pianist from another on a recording. I can also accept the fact that it will be too expensive to establish some form of industry review to make sure that the labels on recordings are accurate with respect to the musicians performing. However, I have learned one thing from this fiasco, and that is not to trust a recording from someone that no one has heard in live performance for 30 years. It would make sense that in future, if a recording is submitted for review from a musician who has not performed recently on the concert stage or anywhere else in public, that someone make the effort to hear the artist play something before publishing a review and promoting the recording. Had anyone asked Hatto to sit down and play the equivalent of one or two tracks from any of her recordings (say some of the Transcendental Études or Godowsky Variations), this whole business would have been nipped in the bud.
