I write to applaud John Quinn's positive reaction to this exciting new disc including Colin Matthews wonderfully imaginative orchestral arrangement/reworking - call it what you like - of Debussy's Preludes.
My CD collection includes many different types of arrangements: Brahms piano reductions of his orchestral and chamber works, the Liszt piano versions of Beethoven Symphonies and the Barshai versions of the Shostakovich quartets etc.
Listening to great music in alternative ways only serves to illuminate my listening pleasure, forcing me to return to the pieces in their original format, as John suggested in his excellent review.
I always listen to this new version of the Preludes in one go, as it makes a most satisfying entity. I agree with John that the decision to link the final 2 together was masterful, with the final piece sounding like a Mahler adagio - whatever, I was almost moved to tears by it.
I strongly recommend it to anyone who loves music.
One final point: are there pieces which are almost impossible to orchestrate - what about Beethoven's Op 111?
