There's a whole repertoire of piano music by composers like Dussek and Tomasek which influenced any composer at the time who didn't want to go the whole way with Beethoven - including Schubert and, evidently Ries.
Since this repertoire is almost unknown, I can hardly blame a critic who does not spot these influences. But did the writer of the booklet notes not provide any help?
