In his interesting review of the new Lyrita release of Scott's piano concerti and "Early One Morning", John Quinn refers to the "unmemorable" nature of the musical material in the First Piano Concerto. This is not my experience of the music (although it does apply more, in my view, to the Second Concerto). What I love about the First Concerto is the unique and haunting atmosphere, which had me playing the LP over and over again in my youthful listening persona, and which had me longing for a CD release. "Early One Morning" is a beautiful work, which I also often return to. The new Lyrita CD, as John says, is a fine tribute to John Ogdon and Bernard Herrmann as well as to Cyril Scott himself.
