Thanks for your thoughts Martin - it's good to see comment on reviews in Seen and Heard appearing on the Board. I know that Mark Berry is away at the moment so it seems reasonable for me - as one of the S and H Editors - to offer a response to what you say.
Without going into too much of the detail in your note, I feel bound to mention that the production concept chosen by von Götz for the Edinburgh/Cologne Capriccio was viewed as relevant and understandable by virtually all reviewers who reported it, admittedly some more enthusiastically than others: a quick check on The Opera Critic web site (www.theoperacritic.com) can confirm this.
It may also help explain Mark Berry's point of view if I add that he is a British Academy Fellow at Peterhouse, Cambridge - whose research concerns the role of music and aesthetics in political thought from Wagner onwards. His book 'Treacherous bonds and laughing fire: politics and religion in Wagner's 'Ring' ' was published by Ashgate ( Aldershot) in 2006 and a recent paper, 'Romantic modernism: Bach, Furtwängler, and Adorno' will appear in New German Critique in 2008.
