I don't know if you are acquainted with the live 1976 Proms performance by Boult & the BBC SO, Jonathan? This is the best interpretation I have ever heard, exciting as well as noble. It was once on an IMP proms Centenary collection, definitely the highlight of those 2 discs, though Beecham's Tannhäuser was also very good.
