G'day from Oz. I wonder can anyone help me track down a banjo-maker by the name of Victor Ellis. He lived and worked at 191 St John's Hill, Battersea, from 1903 - 1911 and is listed as "Ellis, Victor Banjo Studio" in the business directories of the time.
I have one of his banjos (which I bought in the Clifford Essex store in Earlham Street in the late 60s), and would love to find out about Ellis and his career.
It has the serial number 1804, which suggests that Victor was a prolific manufacturer.
I notice in my searches that there are several references to Herbert J. Ellis... I wonder are they related.
As far as I am aware, Ellis is not a particularly common name - especially in the banjo world.
Any information, or suggestions as to where I can look would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
