Ha Ha! Everyone's a critic! I see this thread suffers as the Gramophone reviews of the 60's and 70's did, in that everyone is far too snobby to appreciate Bernstein as one of the greats. Maybe none of you heard him live, or more likely it's just that awful snobbery inherent in so many.
But at the end of the day, if you are lucky enough to hear a great performance live, and appreciate it as such, you would realise that it takes more than just a particular conductor.
And if I may add my own jibe at Rattle, I've heard him live often, and his facial expressions are so awful that even if he managed a great performance it would be aesthetically ruined for me - ha ha - call me shallow.
