"The cross-rhythms at the start of “Noctuelles” – the first of the “Miroirs” – are perhaps intended to puzzle the ear, but I have heard more sense made of them than this. In general, both her bats and her “Oiseaux tristes” – the second “Miroir” – seem a little heavy on their wings."
What bats? (I will refrain from making any bad puns here...) Noctuelles are night moths and their aerodynamic behaviour is rather different from that of bats, so you will have to begin re-imagining the referent of Ravel's musical picture here! Or am I missing something?
To return to the ground - this is the best combined review of Debussy/Ravel piano music I can remember reading: I really admire the questing sensibility and expertise that can make these judicious comparisons and then view its own inferences and conclusions with a degree of scepticism.
