This is a most splendid and entertaining frolick! However, in the interests of accuracy, may I make one small observation? The idea mooted in 1866 related to England being "a land without its OWN music", that is, devoid of significant composers with an original, distinctive English style. As I said in the next paragraph of my note, "[English composers] at best . . . imparted an English flavour to a menu already served, consumed and digested in mainland Europe."
This is not quite the same as saying that the place was populated by 'orribly unmusical (amateur) performers of music, however true that may be. It's amazing what a difference one little word can make.
Nevertheless, as Martin has intimated, the whole subject sounds liek a source of endless amusement, so bring it on!
