It is/was a very common error. I remember his name well from BBC broadcasts when I was barely a teenager and the name stuck firmly in my mind as Vintner. It was only quite recently, as a result of nearly making the same mistake myself, that I discovered Vinter was the correct form. It sounds as though John Sheppard has similar memories to mine. References to him on internet are even now divided about 50-50 between the two forms. I wonder why the mistaken form appeared so often?
