I would be interested to know what listeners opinions are of Vaughan William’s Ninth Symphony. It has been viewed variously as the ramblings of an elderly man or as a new dawn that could never quite reach its high noon. Whatever the views it is part of the RVW canon and deserves consideration, if not sycophantic praise – and since hearing it some 35 years ago I have always been strangely attracted to it.
I am minded to write an article about the reception of this work and would be keen to hear others views. My view tends towards the 'new dawn'...
