I have the Thomson box set. I largely agree with Rob's comments. I would choose the Lyrita releases of the symphonies. Thomson's No 4 is a great performance and maybe he should have continued the cycle with the Ulster Orchestra. I also like Vernon Handley's earlier recording of the Symphony with the Guildford Philharmonic. For No 3, by far my favourite recording is Edward Downes with the LSO (RCA). Unfortunately this has never been released on CD. Barbirolli is a historic alternative. Certainly Leppard's nos 5 and 7 on Lyrita are unrivalled. I like Thomson's No 6 although Del Mar on Lyrita is probably the best. Goosens' historic recording of No 2 (Dutton) is another essential recording in my view.
