I'm not a P & B expert, Goran, but when you say "Readers who want a complete recording of this American ‘verismo’ opera have two splendid sets to choose from: Lorin Maazel’s Decca recording from the mid-1970s and the aforementioned EMI set under Rattle from the late 1980s" I think you have forgotten the Houston Grand Opera recording on RCA (I checked on Amazon UK - it's available). I only have the 1 disc selection of this but find it has wonderful theatricality and good recording - I heard the Maazel once and found it was a tad lacking in the former. So there are three, unless the Houston performance somehow doesn't count as complete?
