Thanks for making this point.
One of my intentions in writing reviews is to give some crude (or on occasions better) impression of what the music sounds like. I do this by reference to music others may know.
When I first became interested in classical music I wanted that sort of guidance to help me make decisions about what to explore further. Now I try to give that sort of guidance.
My reviews follow the same line although sometimes I do struggle - as is all too obvious.
There was no intention to suggest that Sullivan had been influenced in that work by Massenet: the odd infusion. Although even if that had been possible I still do not see influence as any detraction from the joy given by a piece nor any demerit on the composer. Originality does not for me have any intrinsic merit.
I cannot recall exactly where I felt it sounded like Massenet but I know that towards the end of the sequence I thought - THAT sounds like the suite from El Cid (one of my early favourites in the EMI recording by Fremaux).
Will have another look at the review.
Thanks for pointing this out.
Rob
