Hello Rob -
I am alarmed by the thought of you writing an email at such an unearthly time on a Saturday morning!
Your ideas on how to write a review are, I think, absolutely correct; it's like writing a concert programme note - only a tiny part of the audience is concerned with pure sonata form and recapitulations and ritornellos and neapolitan sevenths and other arcane technicalities - the rest want to read something interesting, that is understandable, and makes sense. If I may add, although I might not necessarily agree with every one of your reviews (music appreciation being such a subjective thing) I cannot recall an instance where I have not enjoyed reading your reviews, which are well thought out, reasoned and engagingly written.
Your review of the Sullivan/Sibelius disk is a case in point; as One who is actively engaged in promoting Sullivan's music, most of which (apart from the 'Savoy' operas) is very good but also very little known, I was delighted by your positive writing about the TEMPEST music (as opposed to the recording of it) - anything that enthusiastically encourages readers to explore and appreciate Sullivan beyond The Mikado is very welcome!
I am intrigued by your reference to LE CID, to which I shall listen again, today - a kind of 'spot the similarity' Saturday game!
With kind regards
ROBIN
