Worse still, "may" in this context means, if it means anything at all, that you don't know if you were or not, which contradicts the first part of the sentence.
As a simple mnemonic for remembering that may and might are not always interchangeable, compare these two sentences:
"This is a man who might have been Prime Minister"
"This is a man who may have been Prime Minister"
The first tells us that a promising career didn't work out.
The second tells us that the speaker isn't sure if he was or not, but thinks it likely.
