I had a cassette tape of the 23rd Symphony (on Caucasian Themes) recorded off BBC Radio Three in the early- mid 1980s. This cassette I transported to the Far East and treasured without knowing any other MYSKY symphonies - except the Russian Disc 6th Symphony.
Now I have purchased the Svetlanov set I find this performance lethargic. Just as his Balakirev set for Hyperion was lethargic.
How much more dynamism might there be in the music if we didn't have so sober an interpreter?
But, grateful for small mercies, this is clearly marvellous music and I might get used to the Caucasian slow footed steppes!
