Any readers who miss out on the mammoth DG box have several alternatives and the IRR survey, mentioned by Patrick, is a useful summary of the pros and cons of each.
MDT are also stocking the Warner Classics Messiaen Edition, which I can strongly recommend as an alternative. This box is a "mere" 18 CDs. It includes Yvonne Loriod in many of the key piano works, Marie-Claire Alain and Messiaen himself in organ works and several big orchestral pieces. Whilst the box doesn't pretend to be a "complete edition" it contains many of Messiaen's most important pieces.
The documentation is absolutely superb - a 312 page booklet which includes comprehensive notes, all texts and the transcript and English translation of an hour-long interview with Messiaen, in French, that takes up CD 18.
If you miss the DG box at MDT they're offering this Warner box at £35.72 - at £2 per disc it's another amazing bargain.
