Whilst I accept that everybody's perception and experience of a performance is difference and valid for the individual I have to ask was the critic who reviewed Der fliegende Hollander at Covent Garden at the same performance that I attended? Apparently so according to the date, but maybe he was having an off night or was suffering from dyspepsia. Rarely do I disagree so fundamentally with a critic. Magnificent conducting, great singing from Terfel and Kampe, and an intriguing production with insights to set the mind thinking resulting in the rare accolade of the production team being applauded rather than the usual booing. What more could one ask for? These thoughts are echoed in the Telegraph and Independent (so far - with other reviews to come), so I hope readers will not just take this one critic's view as being representative of the actual performance.
