At the Grand Hotel Park Gstaad on Tuesday 29 December, the 4th edition of the New Year Music Festival opens with Marthe Keller in an artistic evening in German and French "Die Nacht / Musique et la Nuit". The headline sponsor is Audemars Piguet to whom the festival dedicated its "Pianoforte" Recital Series in recognition of the timepiece of the same name.
Audemars-Piguet gives the possibility to our festival to achieve its musical aims -inspired by the spirit and the example of Yehudi Menuhin. Due to the support, from the beginning, of the Grand Hotel Park Gstaad, the festival has been able to showcase world talents such as Maxim Vengerov, Grace Bumbry, Irini Tsirikidis, Leontina Vaduva alongside rising talents including Measha Brugger Gossman, Denis Kojouhkin, David Kadouch, Dimitri Maslennikov, Tatjana Vasiljeva and Alexandra Soumm. Some of these young artists rose through the scholarship programme of the APMC under the patronage of Jean-Yves Thibaudet - the not-for-profit-organisation which organizes this festival as part of its long term,
Interalp Music Festivals which started in 2003 and whose "marraine" is the actress Sophia Loren.
The connections of the Artistic Director of the Festival, Caroline Murat (Haffner) herself a concert pianist, have created links with renowned colleges and music institutions such as the Geneva Conservatory, Geneva International Competition, the Glenn Gould Foundation, the Astana Academy, IMOLA, Reina Sofia (Madrid), Jaen International Piano Competition, the Paganini International Competition the Purcell School of Music and the Verbier Academy.
The festival has been able to invite orchestras such as The Kazakh Presidential orchestra, Camerata Lysy, Gabor Takacs-Nagy's Tibor Varga orchestra, as well as creating its own chamber orchestra with musicians from the Verbier Festival Orchestra, the Tonhalle Zurich and the OSR.
Last year 85 musicians from 24 countries were involved in the festival over 16 concerts. Local partners, including the Gstaad Yacht Club, Olden and the Rialto generously welcomed these artists and allowed the inter-action between the
different genres of music - including classical and baroque, world music and jazz - and contact between musicians such as Julien Jallal Eddine Weiss , Didier Lockwood, DJ Albert de Paname and their audiences.
As ever, through the festival's Comité de Soutien, the festival is able to welcome notable local and international celebrities. The Comité members include Martin T:Engstroem, the Founder of the Verbier Festival and Academy and HH Prince Pavlos, whose parents, King Constantin and Queen Anne Marie came to the opening concert of the festival in 2006 featuring Elena Kelessidi.
With its popular children's concert on the afternoon of 31st December followed by the traditional, free concert for the benefit of local people in Gstaad at 7.30pm on New Year's Eve, the festival's detailed programme has been finalized with the festival sponsors, musiicans, friends and supporters. We look forward to welcoming you at any of the 14 concerts between Tuesday 29 December 2009 and Sunday 3 January 2010.
