Thank you, Patrick, for saving me from my own stupidity: I had registered your point about the software but was so resistant to the idea of downloading even more media players that I repressed the whole suggestion. However, on reflection following your reply, I decided that it might also be possible with what I have - and yes, Rhythmbox music player allows crossfading, which one then sets at zero seconds and restarts the computer; hey presto! No jumps. Wikipedia does say for this software "while formats like FLAC and Ogg Vorbis can be played back seamlessly with the crossfading backend, gapless MP3 playback is still not currently supported", but I find that both MP3 and MP4 work in this gapless mode, so the advice must now be: check your present software for this facility before downloading any more programs.
I shall now consider downloading more music!
