Mr. Woolf writes: "The original recording was apparently - Iíve never heard it - very boxy and the gaps between movements extremely small. The former seems to have attended to via XR opening out, but the latter has been left Ďas isí."
I had the original LP, and the sound was indeed boxy. However, the extremely small gaps between movements, quite correctly, were not "attended to" as a check of the score will show that is the way Mendelssohn intended it.
Incidentally, Mitropoulos' tempi allowed both symphonies to occupy one LP--one each to a side. Not unusual for 5, but definitely rare for 3. I know of no other case where 3 fit on one side of an LP.
