David was a student in Prague when I was there in 1967 - we were both in the same student hostel, the Kolej Komenskeho, which was specially for foreign students. Like me he had a British Council scholasrship. We were the only two British students so we occasionally went out for a drink or a meal or to concerts, though, as he was always short of money, he offered to cook every week or two if I paid for the food. He cooked a mean curry, but found I was able to eat as fast as he could, so he made the food hotter and hotter to discourage me - unsuccessfully. For the last meal we were both stripped to the waist sweating from the heat of the food. His Indian neighbour asked him for the recipe!
He was in the process of splitting up with his Czech girlfriend, but quickly found another, Miss Holubova (Dove), whom he subsequently married. I had no further contacts after leaving Prague, but I did see an article in one of the weekend magazines (Guardian?) about the problems of British composers, with a picture of him and his wife.
I was not in Prague when his violin concerto was given its world premiere, played by 'the second best' Czech volinist whose name I cannot remember (not Suk) but his tape of it was not good enough to play, so I never heard it. He did however play some pieces which had won a prize in Britain which was supposed, as part of the prize, to be broadcast by the BBC; they were only induced to do so when he went to the union to force them. He claimed it was because he was not in the school of Schoenberg, which held a monopoly of the playing of new music on the BBC at the time.
It would be good to hear his concerto sometime.
