Re: Beecham: The Classical Tradition
It is true that I do not comment specifically on the remastering of this set. Although I heard most of these recordings in earlier forms - mainly as LPs - I did not have them to hand when reviewing the present set so that I was not able to make a direct comparison with them. What I can say is that the recorded sound did not sound markedly different to my memories of the performance, and it never distracted me from the quality of the performances, even in the pre-war items. For the Beecham enthusiast, prepared to forgive the recorded sound of even the live recordings of "Les Troyens" or "Otello", this is in itself something to be grateful for. Obviously these are not modern recordings, and I do not doubt that it may be possible for a new attempt at remastering them to produce something even better. Nonetheless what we have here is more than adequate to appreciate the quality of performance available here at such an astonishingly low price.
