It's two books - quite chunky, but relatively approachable. It occurred to me that, if you are writing a novel, you actually know more about symphonic process than you realise. I find the creative process of writing a piece of music and a story much the same - chipping away at elusive imagery, making discoveries along the way, discarding material you'd alway imagined would be central but which in the end turns out no longer to fit. When it comes to extended forms you have to be in absolute control of every aspect of the piece to prevent yourself writing yourself into a corner or have the thing collapse into a formless mess.
