Alternative timpani at close of Sibelius Symphony 2
Posted by Alan Becker on July 14, 2013, 2:18 pm
Michael Cookson's otherwise laudatory review of Sir Mark Elder's Sibelius Symphony 2 does not indicate if Sir Mark utilizes the alternative timpani part at the close of the last movement. While the absence will not necessarily dismiss it from consideration, few will deny that it makes for a far more effective close. As with the trumpet at the close of Debussy's La Mer, I would certainly like to know.
