I was a little surprised that Mr. Morgan did not mention Fritz Reiner's CSO recording of Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta, which is widely regarded, at least here in the U.S., as the benchmark for this piece. Nor does one have to listen through an archaic-sounding recording; in its current remastering, Reiner's performance comes through with clarity, atmosphere, and power.
