Atterberg and the Nazis
Posted by Jeffrey Davis on February 9, 2014, 7:10 pm
In Rob Barnett's terrific survey of the CPO box set of Atterberg's symphonies he comments that Atterberg appeared to have sided with the Nazis in World War Two and quotes the uninspiring fact that Atterberg's 7th and 8th symphonies were premiered in Nazi Germany. As an admirer of Atterberg I have always found this dispiriting. However, in the fine new Jarvi recording of symphonies 2 and 8 on Chandos there is no mention of this in relation to Symphony 8. The booklet not maintains that 'The first performance of Symphony No. 8 was given on 9th February 1945 as part of an all-Swedish concert which Atterberg conducted in Helsinki, and which was broadcast by Finnish Radio'.
