Manheim has the reply to all attitudes towards John Cage, but somewhat shoots his own argument in the foot in stating: "By the way musicians, chroniclers, and intellectuals of the 20th Century treat Cage’s life and legacy, we can assess their judgment about the role of music in society."
Pompous musings can sweep both ways.
