Gulliver - that is fascinating, thankyou for the insight. Proof again that just about any comment on Bruckner's performing editions is fraught with dangers! From a purely practical/performing point of view I can understand that there is an aural and visual impact using the 3 harps. The 3 timpanists is harder to explain unless from a purely technical standpoint of re-tuning but even this seems somewhat unlikely since the part does not require that swift changing of the playable note(s)or the playing of more than one note at a time. Could there be numerical significance in a trinity of players?
