Many new Furtwaengler recording are appearing on various odd labels. Many say only were formerly available in japan. A reason for this is, as the USA controlled Austrian Radio Red-white-Red up to 1955, obviously many tapes were carted off by various folk in diplomatic and other bags to Japan, where they ended up on Toshiba. Since the USA ran Japan up to Korean war, copies did not get out till later. For example the Fidelio 1950 recording EMI did has duff sound but the one on opus kura and Naxos is better. I prefer the 1953 lice recording from Theater an der Wien on Archipel, best Fidelio ever. The ICA classics 9th was made in 1953 and the tape must have been spirited away by the US occupiers to Japan.
