As someone who has worked for many years in Musical Theatre it still amazes and annoys me in equal degree how rarely the specialist performers - singers, conductors and players - within this genre are taken seriously.
John Owen Edwards is a case in point - an excellent all-round musician. Interestingly, Martin Yates in recent years has "broken free" of his MT roots and is suddenly a 'serious' conductor. He is very fine - but then he was when he conducted shows too.
For what its worth I like a lot of the singing on the TER West Side - particularly Paul Manuel - but find John Yap's production rather swimmy.
