To the best of my knowledge on 29 November 1947 the work was played straight through from start to finish and the BBC broadcast it live as it happened. That much seems clear from Jon Tolansky's note that accompanies the Testament CDs that I've just reviewed. In other words, Boult gave a complete performance of the work, albeit without his audience being physically present - they were listening on the radio.
This is surely a case where both are right. Boult gave the first live performance of the symphony in the UK and Jascha Horenstein subsequently gave the first UK performance before an audience.
