Dudamel really does polarise opinions. In general I've not warmed to his Mahler, although his Proms Resurrection a few years back and his Caracas Eighth show just how compelling he can be. And as he will succeed Rattle in Berlin others must feel he's worth the gamble. Which is why the Blimpish cries of 'Imposter!', as heard on Amazon and elsewhere, are just absurd.
On another MB recently an indignant poster bewailed the diversity of responses to Leonard Slatkin as a conductor. Such extremes of opinion are unremarkable; indeed, my own reaction to Petrenko's Shostakovich runs counter to the general tide. The key word here is 'opinion'. Gwyn has given his, and now it's time for others to hear this Seventh and form theirs. As Ralph says, with streaming services one doesn't even have to buy the disc first....
