For myself I'd be wary of Dudamel in this symphony. That's based on my experience of him conducting the Ninth http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2013/Feb13/Mahler9_Dudamel_4790924.htm
My colleague, Dan Morgan took a similar view of that performance http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2013/Mar13/Mahler_sy9_4790924.htm
Perhaps more relevantly, I saw him conduct the Seventh in concert some time after he made the recording now issued and I felt he skated over the surface. http://seenandheard-international.com/2013/11/the-dude-takes-birmingham-by-storm-but-did-he-get-beneath-the-surface-of-mahler/#more-37049
However, none of that means that Gwyn's review is "wrong". We all respond to music and to performances personally and it's fair to say, for instance, that the audience reaction to that Birmingham Seventh was very positive, as I noted in my review, and also that Dan Morgan thought extremely highly of his recording of the Eighth. http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2012/Nov12/Mahler_sy8_0734890.htm
I think Ralph Moore hits the nail on the head in advising "try before you buy"
