It's a great noise, with tremendous orchestral presence if more than a tad unrefined. I cannot help but recall that Mahler intoned that the notes on the page tell us everything we need to know about a piece, except the music!, and this is a prime example. Unstructured, inept tempi and balance etc. arguably the best played recording ever is Boulez Cleveland, and it is at the same time the most sterile. This is NOT the best played but rivals the Boulez in sterility. Gielen with the BPO, remains first choice .
