Thank you, Paul and Peter both for your sensible comments, with which, of course, I entirely agree. I did in fact mention the impact on sales, Paul, in my earlier post when I said, "I am hardly surprised that Tchaikovsky is sung in Russian, merely that Melodiya does not see the need for the courtesy of providing translations in any other major European language - especially as it would presumably help their sales."
You cannot be alone in your reaction to issues that do not cater for anyone wanting to know precisely what's being sung. I found the surtitles in last night's concert performance of "Boris Godunov" at the Barbican absolutely indispensable to my (great) enjoyment.
I shall look up that Tolstoy synopsis of the "Ring"; we all like a laugh.
