The collapse between 1953 and 1955 occurred because Pete Seeger, an outspoken communist, was in the cross-hairs of both the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC)and Joseph McCarthy's notorious Senate committee. Only after McCarthy's fall in the summer of 1954 was it safe for the group to mount a comeback.
