I don't think it's unfair to describe Pete Seeger as a communist, if you go by what he said and did--it would have been suicidal for him to describe himself as one. But then, I don't think of communism aa inherently loathsome, just a naive and incomplete: an explanation of human behavior that attributes all to class conflict is almost sure to be corrupted because it is blind to other motives.
As for McCarthy, we agree. He was a drunk and a demagogue who damaged many lives before Murrow and the Army attorney Joseph N. Welch ("Have you no sense of decency, sir?") brought him down.
