Re: Jacob Piano Concerto No 1
Posted by Paul Corfield Godfrey on January 9, 2015, 12:10 pm, in reply to "Jacob Piano Concerto No 1"
I am the errant reviewer to whom Dr Ogram refers in his informative response. The source which I accessed for the broadcast performance of the Jacob concerto was not YouTube but another site, which does not give a date for the broadcast but quite specifically states that the pianist is Iris Loveridge with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ian Whyte. I am not sure whether this is the same broadcast to which Dr Ogram refers as having been recorded by him, but it would seem more than likely to be identical - which leaves one to wonder how an incorrect attribution came into existence in the first place.
Regarding Iris Loveridge's giving the first performance of the concerto, this is of course entirely my mistake. I had a note drawn from an article by Rob Barnett on Miss Loveridge's career which referred to works by Jacob which she had premiered, and for some totally inexplicable reason extended this remark to include the concerto. Graham Parlett in his booklet notes clearly states that the premiere was given by the dedicatee George Benjamin, so I really have no excuse for starting this particular hare running. My apologies all round, and my thanks to Dr Ogram.
Thank you for taking part in the MusicWeb International Forum.
