Re: John McCabe and other living British symphonists,
Although I agree with most of what you say, you've no need to feel pessimistic about the symphony, not even in Britain. It is alive and well and in fact flourishing, as a publication I'm working on will show in a year or two. The number of symphonies on record (CD!) is enormous, even when those by Beethoven, Brahms etc are excluded. Many are by living composers - even British ones! - and my own conclusion is that the symphony will still be around long after the various strands of popular music have run their course (which some might say happened a long time ago, but that's another point)>
